Instructional Design

Turn Expertise into a Powerful Learning Experience

Our instructional design services help you transform your team’s valuable knowledge into a clear, strategic blueprint for an effective and engaging training program.

The Foundation of All Great Training

Your organization is rich with expertise. It lives in the minds of your subject matter experts, in dense operational manuals, and in years of presentation decks. However, having the knowledge and creating effective training from it are two very different things. Without a strategic plan, even the most valuable content can become an overwhelming, ineffective, and frustrating experience for learners.

This is where instructional design consulting comes in. It’s the essential first step that turns content chaos into a clear, actionable blueprint for success. By applying instructional design best practices and science-backed learning principles, we help you answer the critical questions you’re likely facing right now:

  • Where do we even begin with all this complex, disorganized information?
  • How can we create training that translates directly into achieving our business goals?
  • What's the most effective and engaging way to present this content for our specific audience?

Your Strategic Blueprint for Effective Learning

We partner with you in a strategic, consultative capacity to build the foundation for your training program. Our instructional designers are experts at turning your goals and raw content into a detailed, development-ready plan.

Align strategy and objectives

We work with your stakeholders to transform high-level business goals into clear, measurable learning outcomes that will guide the entire project and define success.

Analyze your audience’s needs

Our process starts with a deep dive into understanding your learners—their roles, challenges, and motivations—to ensure the final program is truly relevant and effective.

Structure your expert content

We collaborate with your subject matter experts to organize their deep knowledge into a logical, easy-to-follow curriculum map that prevents information overload and builds context.

Design the engagement strategy

We map out the most effective ways to make the content interactive and memorable, recommending the right blend of scenarios, simulations, and activities for your specific goals.

Plan for measuring impact

We help you define a clear assessment strategy, outlining how the training will measure comprehension and skill application to provide meaningful insights.

Create the course blueprint

The final deliverable is a detailed storyboard—a complete, scene-by-scene blueprint of your course that is ready for development by your team or ours.

Structuring Success for a National Safety Certification

The Challenge: The Construction Safety Association of Manitoba needed to create a comprehensive and engaging new eLearning program for its national COR™ Safety Certification. The content was complex, extensive, and absolutely critical to get right.

Our Solution: The foundation of this successful project was a deep instructional design partnership. Our instructional designers worked closely with CSAM’s subject matter experts to audit, organize, and structure 19 modules of dense safety material into a clear and logical learning curriculum. This strategic blueprint became the roadmap for the entire development process.

The Result: The new COR™ course is a success, providing learners with a streamlined and effective certification path. The initial strategic work in instructional design was the key, ensuring the final product was not only engaging but also instructionally sound and meeting all of the critical learning objectives for this vital safety program.

Working with Neovation’s Custom Learning team was a great experience. From start to finish, our project was organized and managed with clarity and transparency. We felt informed, supported, and confident throughout the process. The collaboration was smooth, and the team was thoughtful in bringing our vision to life.

FAQ about Instructional Design

What is instructional design, and why do I need it if I already have experts?

Your experts know what to teach; an instructional designer knows how to prepare it effectively for learner consumption. Instructional design is the science of structuring content and creating experiences that make learning easier, more engaging, and more memorable. It ensures your expert knowledge is translated in a way that your audience can absorb and apply.

What is the actual deliverable of instructional design services?

The primary deliverable is a comprehensive, development-ready “blueprint” for your training program. This typically includes a detailed curriculum map, a complete storyboard with all on-screen text and narration, and a description of all visuals and interactive elements. This final storyboard is ready for development using your chosen authoring or creative tools.

Our internal team is stretched thin. How does your team collaborate with ours?

We are designed to meet you where you need us. Our instructional designers can act as an extension of your team, taking the lead on the heavy lifting and guiding the process from start to finish. We can also provide customized support to augment your existing team, filling in specific skill gaps or providing an expert review of your work. Our goal is to make the process easy and efficient for you.

Can instructional design help us with existing training, not just new courses?

Absolutely. If an existing course isn’t performing well, an instructional design consulting session is the perfect first step. We can conduct a full audit of the program, identify areas of weakness, and create a strategic plan to restructure and redesign it for greater impact and engagement.

We’ve never created a custom training course before. Do we need to be experts?

Not at all. Our process is designed to support you every step of the way. You bring the expertise about your business and your people; we bring the expertise in learning science and design. We make it easy for you to be successful by guiding you through a collaborative process, asking the right questions, and handling all the instructional design work. You don't have to be a training expert to create great training.
